ICAN OF GREATER CLEVELAND LENDING LIBRARY
Purpose of our Library
ICAN chapter by-laws state that one of our functions shall be to maintain a library and provide information to assist consumers to be more informed. Nancy Cohen writes in Silent Knife that:
“Information yields power, so birthing women need as much information as they can get their hands on to make decisions concerning their care and to effect changes in the present maternity care system. Ignorance is not bliss. Information can enlighten us, excite us, motivate us…We need to learn the dangers of all interventions and set limitations-- no one else is going to do it for us. Our babies cannot say no, so we must say it for them, loudly and clearly. Knowledge can give us the confidence to make truly informed decisions.”
To this end, ICAN of Greater Cleveland maintains an extensive Library to be used as a free resource for ICAN subscribers.
Description of our Library
The ICAN of Greater Cleveland Library has over 60 titles, including books, videos, and articles related to virtually all the aspects of the birthing process. We have current information as well as “classic” material, and we work to keep it updated with annual purchasing. Our complete Library list can be viewed on our web site, www.icanofgreatercleveland.org and is included in “New Subscriber” packets. We welcome donations of appropriate materials and suggestions for resources to be purchased. We consider our Library to be a valuable resource in our mission.
Rules and Regulations for Library Use
The ICAN of Greater Cleveland Library is a privilege of subscribership to ICAN, and we encourage its use. While our entire Library list is available on our web site, a large sampling of the Library is brought to monthly meetings. Materials may be borrowed on a meeting-to-meeting basis. Each resource has a sign-out card that must be filled out with the subscriber’s name, phone, and date that is to be returned to the chapter librarian. Subscribers may contact the librarian in advance via phone or the web site for a specific title to be brought to a meeting or to borrow between meetings. While our Library is free, we do appreciate your timely return of materials so that others may use them as well.
